Letter to Keir Starmer: don't discharge homeless hospital patients to the streets
Porchlight and other charities are calling for change
We've signed an open letter to Keir Starmer that calls for homeless hospital patients to get more support.
When someone who's homeless is discharged from hospital, they often return to the streets and their problems continue. We work out of several Kent hospitals (in partnership with the homeless healthcare charity Pathway and the NHS) to make sure people have a home to go to
We want to see that support everywhere. It's why we're backing Pathway's calls for the government to use its NHS 10-year plan and cross-government strategy to end the revolving door between hospitals and homelessness.
Many of the problems that people experiencing homelessness face can make their health worse, including limited access to health care. Three quarters of people who were rough sleeping when they entered this trial were discharged from hospital into safe, secure accommodation.
